Quote for today on independence

Technically, we have two quotes on independence from Thomas Jefferson:
Were we directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should soon want bread.
Government cannot know what's best for us, nor can it provide all that we need. A related quote:
The policy of American government is to leave its citizens free, neither restraining them nor aiding them in their pursuits.
